Why/how
I started cycling?
I started cycling because I could no longer run without severe
pain in my arches and my Achilles tendons. The doctor said I had
to stop running or risk rupturing my Achilles tendons. This was
after 12 years of running 35+ miles a week. I couldn't become a
couch potato so I let Ralph talk me into cycling. I started cycling
in the late fall of 1998. Mike Notheis sold me a Diamondback for
a lot more money than it was worth. It was a 7 speed Shimano 600/105
mix with down tube shifters, cheap tires and a seat that was nothing
more that hard plastic covered with thin polyester material. In
spite of this wonderful machine, I was hooked by January of 1999.
Current
cycling motivation:
I am motivated to continue cycling basically so that I can eat
whatever and whenever I want. That was my motivation behind running
and it remains my motivation for cycling. Cycling also helps keep
me in shape for ice hockey, my other addiction. My goals for cycling
are to consistently pedal more miles per month then the same month
from a year ago. I broke into the 26 mph club this year on August
2, 2001.
Other interesting facts:
I play ice hockey year round and softball in the spring and
the fall.

Cycling accomplishments:
My biggest accomplishment so far has been the 99 Chattanooga
Ride it is also my most memorable ride. I wanted to quit at about
75 miles. I hated Ralph from mile 70 to about mile 80, but after
I got past that, I loved every minute of it. Chattanooga is also
my longest ride.
Most
Miles in a year:
6504 in 2001
My
fastest ride:
26.209
Lunch-time 20 miler on August 7, 2001.
My
worst crash:
March 7, 2002. I went over the handle bars when a mini van stopped
short in front of me. Separated my left shoulder. It required
surgery to fix. I was off the bike for 2.5 months.
