Sport Psychology Clinic Series

Frazier Cycling is hosting a series of 3 presentations this spring by Sports Psychologist, Dr. Megan Nyer.  This program is designed for parents and junior cyclists who want to perform at their top.  Dr. Megan Neyer, is President of Total Performance Systems, Inc. and a former international competitive diving champion.

Dates: Mondays, March 9, 23, 30 from 7:30-8:30 pm in Duluth (TBD)
Cost: $50/Family, RSVP by 2/27/09

Sport psychology addresses the mental side of performance.  There are several skills that can be taught to promote psychological efficiency and mental toughness when cycling.  When these skills are combined in competitive circumstances, they give the rider the best opportunity to perform at their best.

Session One: The Four Energies:  What Really Matters?

  • This session will focus on our four energy sources -- physical, emotional, mental and spiritual -- and help the cyclists to understand what is giving them energy and what is taking it away in these areas as it relates to their training and racing.

Session Two: What You See is What You Get:  Using Imagery to Realize Your Goals

  • One of the most important skills used by top level athletes is imagery.  If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll probably end up somewhere else.  Being able to “see” success even before you experience it will make it much more likely that you will achieve your goals.

Session Three: Pre-race Preparation and Confidence

  • We will put several of the skills together that have been taught in the past two sessions and talk about what will help them be most confident before and during the race.

What It Is and What It Isn't

1. Sport Psychology - What It Is

Sport psychology addresses the mental side of performance. There are several mental skills that can be taught to promote psychological efficiency on the playing field. These skills are then combined to optimize performance.

These skills include:

  • energy management (“amp” up or calm down)
  • self-talk and addressing cognitive distortions
  • visualization/imagery
  • goal setting
  • centering

The combination of skills include:

  • pre-practice and post-practice routines and logbooks
  • concentration/focusing
  • pre-event routines
  • confidence
  • communication
  • teambuilding

Sport psychology also addresses coach/athlete issues, team or family issues, injury recovery, developmental and clinical issues (provided by those trained to address those specific issues).

2. Sport Psychology–What It Isn’t

A. Magic – no magic wands, fairy dust or quick fixes – it’s not mystical
B. Instant – just add water
-sport psychology requires a commitment to learning, as well as time and energy to practice the skills learned. It will not solve all of your problems. Both the athlete and coach need to be committed to learning about it and reinforcing it on a daily basis so it becomes a part what an athlete and coach do every day, not something "extra" or "different" than regular practice.

Critical variables to athletic performance include:

Level 1

A. Physical skills

  1. correct responses
  2. form and technique control

B. Physical condition

  1. strength
  2. flexibility
  3. general health

C. Talent and learning

  1. natural ability
  2. potential
  3. intelligence
  4. willingness to learn

Level 2

A. Motivation

  1. high vs. low
  2. positive vs. negative
  3. internal vs. external

Level 3

A. Psychological control

  1. energy control
  2. attention control
  3. imagery

Level 4

A. Conceptual skills

  1. self-expectancy
  2. self-confidence
  3. self-image
  4. relationships with coaches, teammates, etc
